Canine Hip Dysplasia

Canine Hip Dysplasia is a painful orthopedic disease that affects many larger breeds of dogs. The disease is hereditary and progressive, so let's take a look at what causes Canine Hip Dysplasia, how it can be detected, and what you can do to help your pet.

Canine Hip Dysplasia causes abnormal development of the ball and socket joint in a dog's rear legs. Since the parts are not properly formed, the joint tends to slip and rub, leading to pain and loss of mobility. The friction eventually begins to wear away the fibrous lining of the joint, damaging the cartilage. The cartilage responds by releasing inflammatory proteins, causing the joint to become tender and sore, just like arthritis. Once this process begins, the joint continues to deteriorate until Canine Hip Dysplasia becomes unbearable for the dog.

Canine Hip Dysplasia is hereditary, so responsible breeders have all their breeding stock X-rayed at the hip joints. The films are then sent to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) where experts will evaluate the results and issue a rating for the animal ranging between Excellent, Good, Fair or Poor. Animals with less than a Good rating should not be bred.

If you have a puppy or older dog with signs of joint pain and stiffness, you should have them examined by a vet for Canine Hip Dysplasia. You can also help protect any dog's joint health by supplementing them with glucosamine to give them the nutrients to boost cartilage production. Healthy Baker Glucosamine Dog Biscuits are a nutritious source of glucosamine that can help improve your dog's joint health and ward off some of the worst affects of Canine Hip Dysplasia.

Canine Hip Dysplasia can be devastating to both owners and their dogs, but at least Healthy Baker Glucosamine Dog Biscuits allow you to provide your pet with nutritional aid for their condition.
